Reading with Alex

I am amazed at how well Alex has improved with his writing and reading since the first day of school! I told his teacher what a great job she is doing and that he is truly enjoying school. Today was our conference with Alex's teacher and we were pleased to hear that he is doing great. One of the things that made us laugh, though was his answer to a story that she read him during one of his evaluations. He was read a story for comprehension skills about animals on a boat. And at the end of the story he had to circle a picture of what it was about. He circled a picture of a cat playing with yarn! (And one of the choices was a picture with animals on a boat!) She said she wasn't sure where that came from! He must've been daydreaming about playing Wii MarioKart or where he was going to hook up his karaoke machine when he got home instead of listening! But, overall, he has a high reading level and is ready for first grade! Wow, he just started kindergarten and we're already talking about first grade!

He has started a program in class where he picks out a book from the library within his reading level and has to read it at home and be ready to take a test at school once he fully understands its content. His book for the week is Olivia Saves the Circus. Tonight he read the book through all on his own, with a little help with some bigger words and I asked him what it was about. We had a good chuckle when I asked him if it was about a cat playing with yarn! We are so proud of him, which I can't say enough! Good job, Alex!
